Technology Graveyard Part 1 ft.Nvidia SLI & AMD Crossfire

Today we’re diving into the tech graveyard to exhume a couple of old-school gaming buzzwords (aka Corpses): SLI and Crossfire. Remember those?

Yeah, neither do most gamers these days. So, grab a shovel, and let’s dig into why these multi-GPU setups have gone the way of the dinosaurs.

Back in the day, SLI by Nvidia and Crossfire from AMD was the ultimate flex. To simplify, with these technologies, you had the power to attach two or more GPUs making an unbeatable beast. But there were some problems too.

  1. Micro-stuttering: Ever watched a movie where the frame rate suddenly changes like hiccups sometimes? That’s micro-stuttering. Despite giving you the power of multiple GPUs, this was one notorious side effect of SLI and Crossfire making it not exactly ideal for a smooth gaming experience.
  1. Driver Issues: While getting multiple GPUs to play feels good and like an accomplishment, driver updates were often needed, and sometimes they made things worse instead of better.
  1. Not All Games Supported: So even if you spend your luck to get a multi-GPU setup, there’s no guarantee that your game will support SLI or Crossfire hence making it not worth the money.
  1. Diminishing Returns: Setting up a multiple-GPU setup doesn’t always mean double performance. Sometimes, you’d only see a minor boost and other times, it was negligible – not giving justice to the investment, hassle, or expense.

Fortunately, Nvidia and AMD soon realized these limitations, and as technology marched on. We got ‘SUPER’ individual GPUs that handle even the most demanding games. Suddenly the need for SLI or Crossfire became irrelevant as the new GPUs were already power efficient working with less generated heat. So who else would spend 2 times more to get half the performance? SLI and Crossfire died that day.

But wait! Despite SLI and Crossfire becoming irrelevant, the multi-GPU configuration continued beyond there. There was still one area where they still hold relevance and that is 3D rendering, video editing, or scientific simulations where the raw power of Multi-GPUs changes the game. In addition to that, Multi-GPUs fastens your workflow by speeding up rendering times, video processing, and doing complex calculations.

In recent years, the relevance of these has gone even further (thanks to Jensen Huang) for usage in training large AI models, performing complex simulations, and running data-intensive workloads with the benefit of its parallel processing capabilities. While a single unit can handle some AI tasks, more complex projects often require the combined power of several GPUs.

So while Nvidia SLI and AMD Crossfire were the ULTIMATE treats for gamers seeking maximum performance, the availability of power single-GPU solutions has more or less replaced them.

And if you want to build a Gaming PC while staying within budget with a single top-of-the-line GPU OR build a PC putting all your rich money into SLI and Crossfire – then you should visit TheMVP.

How to Get Rid of Wrinkles: Retinol, Fillers, and Other Effective Treatments Treatments to Reduce Wrinkles Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but they can make you look older than your years. There are several treatments available to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, ranging from topical creams to invasive procedures. Understanding these options can help you decide which one is right for you. Overview Wrinkles are creases or folds that form in the skin, typically around areas like the face, neck, and hands. They develop due to a combination of factors such as genetics, sun exposure, smoking, and aging. While some people may start noticing wrinkles earlier than others, they become more noticeable with age. What are Wrinkles? Wrinkles are lines or creases that form in the skin. They can vary in depth and density depending on the person. Fine lines often appear around the eyes and mouth, while deeper wrinkles may be more prominent in areas exposed to frequent movement or sun damage. What Causes Wrinkles? Several factors contribute to the formation of wrinkles: – **Aging:** The skin loses elasticity as we age, leading to sagging and creasing. – **Sun Exposure:** UV rays from the sun can damage collagen and elastin, causing lines to form. – **Genetics:** Some people are more prone to wrinkling due to their genetic makeup. – **Smoking and Alcohol:** These habits can impair blood flow to the skin, accelerating wrinkle formation. What are the Treatment Options for Wrinkles? There are a variety of treatments available to reduce wrinkles: 1. **Retinoids** – Retinoids like retinoic acid work by stimulating collagen and elastin production, improving skin elasticity. – They can be used in creams or as oral supplements. 2. **Micro-needling** – This procedure involves using a device with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, prompting it to regenerate and produce new collagen. 3. **Microdermabrasion** – A mechanical exfoliation technique that sloughs off dead skin cells, revealing smoother skin underneath. 4. **Dermabrasion** – Similar to microdermabrasion but uses a wire brush to remove layers of skin, reducing roughness and improving texture. 5. **Chemical Peels** – These use chemical solutions to peel away the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing fresh skin beneath. 6. **Laser Skin Resurfacing** – A non-invasive procedure that uses laser light to target deep layers of skin, promoting collagen production and smoothing out wrinkles. 7. **Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox®, Dysport, Xeomin, Juveau) Injection Therapy** – A neuromuscular blocker that relaxes facial muscles, reducing the appearance of lines caused by repetitive movements. 8. **Fillers** – These are injectable substances like hyaluronic acid used to plump out wrinkles and add volume to areas like the cheeks or lips. 9. **Facelift** – A surgical procedure that involves tightening the skin and removing excess tissue to give a more youthful appearance. Who’s a Good Candidate for Wrinkle Treatments? – Individuals with mild to severe wrinkles – Those with realistic expectations about the outcome – People whose lifestyle factors (like smoking) can be modified if necessary How Common Are Procedures to Treat Wrinkles? Many people opt for wrinkle treatments, and the frequency depends on the severity of their condition. Some may need multiple procedures over time to maintain results. Procedure Details Before a Treatment: – Consult with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and options. – Follow pre-operative instructions, such as avoiding certain skincare products or stopping smoking. During a Treatment: – Depending on the procedure, you may experience discomfort or require numbing agents. – For injectables, a healthcare provider administers the product directly into the skin. After a Treatment: – You may experience redness, swelling, or mild discomfort. – Downtime varies from none (for non-invasive treatments) to several days for invasive procedures. Risks / Benefits Advantages: – Reduced appearance of wrinkles – Improved skin texture and tone – Enhanced self-esteem Risks: – Possible side effects like redness, swelling, or bruising – Risk of complications depending on the procedure – Need for follow-up treatments to maintain results Recovery and Outlook Recovery Time: – Varies by treatment. Non-invasive options may have little downtime, while surgical procedures require weeks of recovery. Do I Need Multiple Procedures? – Yes, many people need multiple treatments to achieve their desired outcome, especially for deeper wrinkles or older skin. When To Call the Doctor: – If you notice significant changes in your skin that cause concern – If over-the-counter treatments aren’t effective – For persistent discomfort or complications Additional Common Questions Can I Get Rid of Wrinkles Permanently? – No, wrinkle reduction is often temporary and may require repeated treatments. At What Age Do I Start Getting Wrinkles? – Wrinkles typically begin in the mid to late 20s but become more noticeable in the 30s. Does Differin® Help with Wrinkles? – Yes, Differin® (retinoid) can help reduce wrinkles by stimulating collagen production.
