Ampere, Ada Lovelace, and now Blackwell.
These are the basic frameworks on which this trillion-dollar company Nvidia – made the ever-growing graphic chips. For example, just look at their latest Blackwell GPU architecture announced in GTC 2024 – It is an advancement to the Hopper chips H100, H200, and GH200 series but if everything is so same, what’s so different about it? Let’s go one by one.
What and Who is Blackwell?
Like every other architecture, the Blackwell too is named after the great American statistics and mathematics pioneer Dr. David Harold Blackwell.
According to Nvidia, Blackwell is not a name given to GPU architecture but a platform that gives rise to not only more efficiency but faster performance. But while the Blackwell architecture looks like a remaster of the previous Ada Lovelace architecture, there are many differences left to be discovered with the first one being made on a 5 nm chip instead of the 4nm Ada Lovelace chip. For obvious reasons, we doubt why Nvidia is taking a step back when the whole world is focusing on bringing chips that are thinner and much smaller.
The second difference was what Nvidia was doing in this 5nm chip. Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang said that this Blackwell architecture will connect two GPU dies across a 10GB/s interconnect which means these two dies will be able to literally “talk” to each other acting like just one big GPU.
The third point is the updated Transformer engine with the ability to handle double the model size of the last-gen Ada Lovelace which simply translates into better efficiency. This means that where we see that Nvidia focusing on larger chips, they are also following a pattern that also lessens the power draw this board will use.
Nvidia could have just stopped there – but wait! There’s one more thing to be considered and that is the 5th gen NVLink. For readers who don’t know what NVLink is, it is a technology that interconnects stacking multiple GPUs (up to 576 GPUs) as you might have seen in servers and data centres – giving a hand to advanced computing capabilities while being reliable, available, and service readily available ensuring that these data centre can work 24×7 without any downtime.
Why JUST Blackwell?
So we now know why you might need Blackwell compared to Ada Lovelace chips, but to real competition, let us now understand this when comparing it with another workstation GPU architecture.
On paper, Blackwell outperforms Hopper to the very core. With the ability to connect over 576 GPUs at a moment, there is even a probability of hitting having 192GB of HBM3E memory, a whole lot of CUDA cores and Tensor Cores, with boost clocks speeds reaching 1800GB/s – Nvidia confirmed this as “the world’s most powerful chip.”
Blackwell is an architecture that is designed not just to meet the demands of today’s AI workload – but made for the future. With its AI super chip and 2nd-gen transformer engine, it can design LLMs, enhanced security, and a 5th-generation NVLink switch.
Blackwell for Gamers and Content Creators
The Blackwell GPU will be of big use in data centres and AI training, it also has exciting things to offer to its consumers. With the first one being gaming. With bigger GPUs and the ability to load bigger data, you can expect more smoother, and immersive gaming experiences with better graphics and faster load times. Perfect for those waiting for GTA 6 on PC
Apart from gaming, it will change how we create content. Video editing will be done by AI in the future. It will remove all the “umm” and “hmm” making the video more crisp and engaging. Other creative tasks like graphics designing and writing will be faster and more efficient with all research done by just AI. And the best part? Getting a Blackwell GPU will future-proof your system. As more software gets optimised for AI, having a Blackwell-based system means you’re ready for the future.
So after this read, we understand one thing. NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture is all set to make a significant change on both large-scale data centres and personal desktops. Whether it’s improving and leveraging AI, boosting efficiency, or enhancing gaming and creative experiences, Blackwell will be the future.
